 Conversation with a Conservator- The Secret Life of Textiles: Synthetic Materials

Sarah Scaturro, Head Conservator, and Leanne Tonkin, Research Fellow, The Costume Institute, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

This conversation will feature the third exhibition in a series on textile fibers. Focusing on synthetic fibers and materials found in fashion garments and accessories in the 20th century, the exhibition will explore the development and use of synthetics for performance, aesthetics, and novelty, and the challenges found in preserving them.

One of the largest, most technically advanced facilities for the study and storage of textiles in any major art museum, the Antonio Ratti Textile Center reflects The Met's longstanding commitment to collecting textiles, beginning with its first textile acquisition in 1879. The museum's encyclopedic collection of textiles includes examples from all of the world's civilizations—archaeological fragments, tapestries, carpets, quilts, ecclesiastical vestments, silks, embroideries, laces, velvets, and more—dating from 3000 B.C. to the present.

Together we knit, sew, embroider, embellish, construct, pattern-make-drape, and create any garment. Nine textile artists/designers got together to build a sculpture full of garment parts, zippers sleeves, legs, socks and skirt shown in 8 teirs as models wearing clothes made from the same materials study the form.

Elodie Blanchard Studio created a site-specific installation of recycled fabric trees for WantedDesign at Industry City in Brooklyn, NY.  The materials used are primarily fabric scraps collected from her own studio, along with leftover fabric and production scraps donated by Araks and HBF Textiles.
