The Textile Lab is a professional workspace and research platform operating within Ta Tarbut Da Vinci, a municipal cultural center in Tel Aviv-Yafo, which supports independent artists across disciplines. Founded to provide meaningful infrastructure for contemporary textile practice, the lab explores alternative models to the conventional textile industry through material research, the development of small-scale production processes, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The online event, held by Roni Yeheskel, founder of the textile lab, will introduce the lab’s unique model: a platform for material research and independent small-scale production that connects craft, contemporary production technologies, and knowledge. The session will present the lab’s activities, the working processes of artists active within it, its artist residency programs, its annual international textile conference, and collaborations across artistic disciplines - from dance and theater practices, also based in the center, to material research and product design.
The talk will also address broader questions: How can municipal institutions support contemporary material-based practices? How does a local textile community emerge within a changing urban and productive environment? And what new models of collaborative making can grow out of accessible and open public infrastructure?
Roni Yeheskel (B. 1986) is a textile designer, curator, and cultural practitioner. She is the founder and director of the Textile Lab at the Tel Aviv Artists’ Center – Ta Tarbut Da Vinci, part of Jerusalem Design Week Curatorial team, and lectures in the Department of Textile Design at Shenkar College.
Roni holds an M.Des in Design Studies from the Bezalel Academy and a B.Des in Textile Design from Shenkar College, where she has been teaching 3D structural weaving, textile product design, and graduation projects, while fostering academic collaborations with industry and cultural institutions.
