To celebrate New York Textile Month, Kat will be creating a textile-based artwork honouring the transformative power of weaving and knitting.
Drawing inspiration from women in ancient Greek mythology, Kat positions weaving, net making and knitting as transformative practices. “In the Odyssey, Penelope uses this seemingly simple act of labour – the craft of weaving and tying knots in yarn, combined with the power of repetition – to effect change and reclaim her fate,” she explains.
Based in Kingston, New York, Kat is a sculptor and installation artist whose work traces the journey of healing from trauma. Through richly textured, abstract forms – from handwoven nets to braided cotton – she explores the relationship between materiality and the body, using tactile processes to evoke resilience and the desire for freedom.
The installation will be on display at TOAST Brooklyn until Sunday, October 18.
