In Person / Workshop / Knotting
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the Turkish knot technique using a small wooden frame loom—a miniature version of the tool used to create the works on view in the exhibition. Working with yarn brought directly from Japan, each participant creates an 8 cm (approx. 3 1/8 in.) knotted sampler, which can be framed, or finished as a brooch or keychain to take home that day. (Persian knotting may also be introduced, time permitting.)
Knotting is a craft quietly gaining popularity across Japan. Unlike tufting, which requires a specialized gun and dedicated workspace, knotting asks only for a small loom, yarn, and patience. The technique is simple to learn yet endlessly expressive—each maker’s choice of color and pattern gives the work its own unique character.
This workshop is ideal for beginners, as well as anyone looking to master the basics before tackling a larger project. The wooden frame looms will also be available for purchase, allowing participants to continue their practice at home.
The session is led by Toyomi Harada, founder of Arts & Crafts Village, who has been instrumental in introducing the art of knotting to a wider audience in Japan.
