Where Every Rug Begins: A Full-Day Knotting Workshop by Noriko Yamanaka

In Person/ Workshop / Knotting

A hand-knotted chair rug is more than a functional object—it becomes a beautiful, practical companion to daily life. A traditional Japanese craft reimagined for contemporary life, knotting is now brought to the US for the first time—and this workshop is one of the first opportunities to learn it here.

In this full-day workshop led by Noriko Yamanaka from Arts & Crafts Village, Japan, you will learn the Turkish knot technique from the ground up. The day begins with a talk on the history of Akō Dantsu—a craft that traveled the Silk Road and found its final destination in Japan, where it evolved to suit the local climate and lifestyle. Today this tradition faces the risk of disappearing, and this workshop is part of an effort to carry it forward.

Once you've learned the technique, all you need is a small wooden frame and yarn—and a little time to yourself. No big equipment, no dedicated studio space. Knot by knot, you'll build a skill that stays with you—and a design sensibility you can bring to every corner of your home.

Participants select and purchase a kit in advance and choose from a range of beginner-friendly designs. By the end of the day, you will have learned to warp the loom, tie the Turkish knot, and finish the edges—taking your work in progress home on the loom to complete at your own pace.
