A hand-knotted chair rug is more than a functional object—it is a beautiful, practical companion to daily life. A traditional Japanese craft reimagined for contemporary living, knotting is now brought to the US for the first time, and this workshop is one of the very first opportunities to learn it here.
In this full-day workshop led by Noriko Yamanaka from Arts & Crafts Village, Japan, you will learn the Turkish knot technique from the ground up. The day begins with a talk on the history of Akō Dantsu—a tradition that traveled the Silk Road to Japan, where it evolved to suit local climate and lifestyle. Today, this heritage faces the risk of disappearing, and this workshop is part of a dedicated effort to carry it forward.
Once you’ve learned the technique, all you need is a frame loom, yarn, and a little time to yourself—no heavy equipment or dedicated studio space required. Knot by knot, you’ll build a lasting skill and a design sensibility you can bring to every corner of your home.
Participants will select and purchase a kit in advance, choosing from a range of beginner-friendly designs. By the end of the day, you will learn how to warp the loom, tie the Turkish knot, and finish the edges. While you won't finish the entire chair rug in one day, you will take home your loom with your work-in-progress to complete at your own pace.

Own Loom Requirement: If you are bringing a loom, please ensure its warp dent matches our class specifications. Looms with a different dent size cannot be accommodated.
